There can be fewer spots on the face of the earth filled with more tension than the Taiwan Straits that separate the People’s Republic of China from Taiwan. China regards the island as a renegade province, while the Taiwanese increasingly see themselves as fully independent. The stakes are huge, not just for Taiwan and China,. but for the future of democracy and the rule of law in Asia and for the western alliance and the values that it claims to embody. To help situate Canadians on the issues and what role Canada should play, I spent some time talking to MLI author J. Michael Cole in a podcast for MLI’s Pod Bless Canada series. Cole is a Canadian now living in Taiwan who specialises in cross-strait issues.
