I will be the wrap-up speaker at the Ottawa Economics Association’s big one day conference on Canada’s future economic challenges at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa on March 24. I’ve been asked to give the overview of the event along with my own prescriptions for Canada’s future.

I’ll be sharing the platform with some of Canada’s biggest thinkers about the challenges ahead, including  Paul Boothe, Senior Associate DM, Industry Canada, Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of Canada, Don Drummond, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, TD Bank, Peter Hall, Vice President and Chief Economist, Export Development Canada, Jack Mintz, Palmer Chair in Public Policy, University of Calgary, Christopher Ragan, Clifford Clark Visiting Economist, Finance Canada, and Department of Economics, McGill University, and Armine Yalnizyan, Senior Economist, Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives.

The Ottawa Economics Association and the Canadian Association for Business Economics will hold their annual Spring Policy Conference on March 23 (evening) and March 24 (full day) at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa.

With governments having responded both creatively and aggressively to the global financial crisis and the subsequent recession, the world and Canadian economies are now experiencing the early months of a tentative recovery. As this recovery takes hold, and private-sector activity gradually returns, governments will need to withdraw their monetary and fiscal stimulus. They must then begin preparing for their next economic challenges.

This year’s policy conference will explore the most important long-run economic challenges that we face as a nation, and the need to begin planning for these challenges now. Some of these challenges have been recognized before, but were temporarily set aside while governments dealt with the urgency of the financial crisis. Others have never yet taken their appropriate place on Canada’s public agenda.

Our speakers will help us to identify the long-run challenges that matter most for the economic well-being of Canadians over the coming decades. They will explain why the complexity of the challenges argues for their placement on the current policy agenda, thus giving Canada’s policy makers sufficient time to design the most appropriate policy responses. Finally, our speakers will provide their sense of which policy approaches are likely to be the most fruitful in addressing these challenges.

This year’s conference will once again bring together some of Canada’s best economic minds and most engaging speakers to help us think through these crucial issues for our collective economic future.  We hope you will join us.

The Program and Registration details provided below. Once again this year we are rolling out the official launch of the conference with an Early Bird Special that will run until February 10.
