July 28, 2012 – Premier Christy Clark’s recent demands to receive its “fair share” of the proceeds and improved environmental protections from the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline is the latest example of nation-building being held hostage to local interest. The fact is that Ottawa has the sole power to authorize this pipeline and the courts will take a dim view of a province trying to achieve indirectly what the Constitution denies it the power to do directly.
